Calculate the SHA-256 digest of a locally selected file. If a trusted source provides a reference digest, paste it to compare your copy with that reference.
How to use SHA-256 Hash Checker
- Choose a local file up to 50 MiB.
- Optionally paste a 64-character hexadecimal reference digest.
- Calculate the hash, then copy or compare the result.
A useful example
The UTF-8 text abc, without a trailing newline, has SHA-256 ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad.
Limits and assumptions
Files stay on your device. The 50 MiB limit reduces browser memory pressure. Web Crypto requires a supported browser and a secure connection. A hash is not a malware scan.
Frequently asked questions
Does a matching hash prove a file is safe?
It confirms agreement with the supplied reference. A harmful file can also match a reference, so the source must be evaluated separately.
Are my files stored on this website?
This tool does not upload or store the selected file. The digest is calculated locally in your browser.
