Estimate download time from file size, connection speed and a chosen allowance for connection overhead. Select the correct units before reading the result.
How to use Download Time Calculator
- Enter the file size and select a decimal or binary unit.
- Enter the connection speed and choose Mbps, Gbps or MB/s.
- Optionally allow for overhead, then calculate the estimated time.
A useful example
A decimal 1 GB file at a constant 100 Mbps takes an ideal 80 seconds with zero overhead.
Limits and assumptions
This is an estimate. Server limits, Wi-Fi conditions, competing traffic and protocol overhead can affect actual speed. GB and GiB represent different sizes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?
Mbps measures megabits per second; MB/s measures megabytes per second. One byte contains eight bits.
Why is the real download slower?
The selected speed may be a maximum rather than a sustained rate. The overhead setting gives a simple allowance, not a prediction of changing network conditions.
